The Link Between the Lymphatic System and Menopause

By Kaye Lindsay, MLD Practitioner – Lymphatic Balance, East Grinstead

Over the years in practice, I’ve supported many women going through perimenopause and menopause, and I’ve noticed something important that often goes unspoken: how closely the lymphatic system and hormonal changes are connected.

As hormone levels begin to shift, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, it can have a significant impact on how the body holds and moves fluid. Many women report feeling puffy, bloated, or even notice tender lymph nodes, especially around the neck, armpits, or groin. While not often listed in medical texts, these symptoms are very real and something I see regularly.

Here’s why the lymphatic system matters during menopause:

  • It plays a key role in removing excess hormones and their byproducts, helping to maintain the body's internal balance.

  • It supports the immune system, which can fluctuate during times of hormonal change.

  • It helps with fat absorption, which is important since fats are the building blocks for many hormones.

  • It influences fluid balance, which is why issues like swelling, puffiness, or water retention can occur more frequently at this stage of life.

When the lymphatic system becomes sluggish, which it easily can due to stress, poor sleep, or inactivity, these symptoms can become more pronounced.

This is where Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can be incredibly helpful.

MLD is a gentle, rhythmic therapy that encourages the natural movement of lymph. Women I treat often notice improvements in:

  • Sleep quality

  • Digestion and bloating

  • Stress levels

  • Energy and mood

  • Reduction in swelling or puffiness

It’s not a cure for menopause, nothing is, but it’s a supportive therapy that helps the body cope more comfortably with the transition.

At Lymphatic Balance, my focus is always on helping you feel lighter, clearer, and more in tune with your body. If you’re experiencing hormonal changes and feel that something just isn’t quite right, especially when it comes to fluid retention, sleep, or overall well-being, MLD may offer the support your body needs.
