Understanding Your Lymphatic Therapy Treatment

A gentle guide for what to expect during your Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) appointment

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is your body’s natural cleansing network. It helps remove waste, supports immunity, and keeps fluids in balance. Lymphatic drainage encourages this flow through gentle techniques, simple movement, and mindful breathing, helping your body restore balance and feel healthier.

At Lymphatic Balance, we use a combination of gentle methods to support your lymphatic system: Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), Deep Oscillation® with Physiopod, and Compression Therapy & Exercise. We also teach Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) techniques for you to practice at home, so you can continue supporting your body between sessions.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

MLD is a soft, rhythmic therapy that encourages the natural flow of lymph through the body. It includes:

  • Diaphragmatic breathing: Slow, relaxing breaths that support circulation and calm the body.

  • Gentle, guided massage: Light, flowing movements along lymph pathways help fluid move naturally.

Benefits of MLD include easing of swelling, supporting circulation, and helping your immune system stay strong.

Deep Oscillation®

Deep Oscillation® is a non-invasive therapy that uses gentle vibrations to reach deep tissues. It can help reduce discomfort, support healing, and gently encourage lymph flow. Treatments are delivered with hand applicators for a soothing and safe experience.

Compression Therapy & Exercise

  1. Compression therapy uses gentle, supportive pressure from bandages or specially designed garments to help direct lymph fluid away from areas of swelling. This approach not only reduces fluid build-up but also supports the surrounding tissues and promotes smoother lymphatic flow.

  2. Exercise, including gentle movements like walking, stretching, or light resistance, works alongside compression therapy to stimulate muscles and boost lymph flow. Regular exercise supports circulation, maintains mobility, and can help prevent future swelling.

When used together, compression therapy and exercise form a gentle yet highly effective routine that actively supports your lymphatic system. This combined approach helps reduce swelling, encourages fluid movement, and promotes overall comfort, leaving you feeling lighter and more energised. In addition, it complements other therapies such as Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Deep Oscillation®, enhancing their benefits and supporting a more holistic approach to lymphatic health and recovery.

Simple Lymphatic Drainage (SLD) at Home

Practising SLD daily can help maintain the benefits of your sessions. We’ll show you easy techniques to use at home, making it simple to care for your body in between treatments. Keeping up with lymphatic drainage will aid greater results from after each treatment at Lymphatic Balance.
